It is exciting to speak with great drummers today about everything and anything in drumming: technique, styles, coordination, bands, influences, double bass, new equipment, etc. Without a doubt, some of today's hottest drummers have pushed the envelope in drumming and we witness this evolution through shows, clinics, books and DVD. But it is not everyday we meet and speak with a drummer who lived in the beginning of the 20th century; who preceded the original classic drum method books; and who witnessed most (or virtually all) of modern drumming evolution. Meet Buddy
Schutz. Buddy was born in 1915 and is now 90 years
old. Within just a couple of minutes of speaking with Buddy, one will hear terrific stories about some of the greats such as Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, and Gene Krupa. This is because Buddy played with the greats. One only has to pick up the Very Best of Benny Goodman CD to hear Buddy's drumming along with that of Gene Krupa and Davey Tough. He also played on albums by Buck Clayton and Charlie Barnet. Buddy will also tell you entertaining stories about a man who greatly influenced education in our industry: his old friend, Ted Reed, famed author of the classic Syncopation book. Perhaps most interesting, Buddy was drumming around the time when movie companies first attempted to add sound to silent movies. And who did they call for the drum part – None other than Buddy Schutz! Drumradio Drum Star Crew
